This studio piece was commissioned by a dear friend of mine for her mom.  Her mom had recently settled into an assisted living facility. My friend thought it would be nice for her mom to have an original piece of art depicting a favorite place of hers - "up along the ponds".  I am very familiar with the area, as it's one of my favorite places to paint.  In preparation, I took tons of reference photos and walked around the area looking for inspiration at different times of day. I also did 3 other studies before I sat down to do this final version. .

I think due to all of the prep work done ahead of time, this painting came together very smoothly.  I am very happy with the results and hope my friend's mom will enjoy the scene in her new home.

Hundred Acre Pond

When I was a little kid, my mom and dad would often take us to Mendon Ponds Park for a picnic and to swim at the beach located on one of the ponds.  I drove out there to look for a nice beach scene to paint and to reminisce a bit.  Well, guess what!?  No beach!  I could see where there had been one at one time, but grass had pretty much taken it over.  Probably the victim of county budget cuts or some other stupid thing that makes cool stuff go away.  I was disappointed, but I still have the memories.

This little painting was done on the other side of the pond from where the beach area was.  It really was a perfect day for painting.  I sat at a picnic table in the shade and enjoyed the light breeze that came from the west.  I pretty much had the place to myself.  I don't know what that purple flower was in the foreground, but I really liked it.

Karen's Koi Pond

This pastel was done last fall at the home of my friend and fellow artist, Karen Arieno.  She and her husband have this picturesque pond behind their house which is now the home of several koi fish.  Karen pointed them out to me swimming past as I was finishing up.  

The painting itself took longer than I expected that day and I wasn't really satisfied with it when I got home.  It sat untouched for several months until I felt ready to tackle it.  All of those reflections were very intimidating and some corrections had to be make.  It was definitely one of the more challenging paintings I have done.

Sunny Bank Across the Pond

The sun shining on the distant bank really caught my eye here. It practically glowed. This was done on a day while I was out in Henrietta. All of the other places I wanted to paint had "no trespassing" signs on them. This was done in their little town park. Trespassing is definitely allowed there. Currently on display in the GVPAP winter show at Barnes and Noble in Pittsford Plaza.

Ice Forming on the Pond

My friend and I walked quite a distance to find this spot overlooking Buck Pond. I really liked the ominous sky and the colors in the November landscape.

Halloween

Painted along one of the lakes in Durand Eastman Park on Halloween 2005. It was overcast, but warm for late October and the colors in the trees were spectacular. .
